JOHN  BABYR, of Chew Stoke, Somerset. Husbandman. (Family pedigree starts here)

1527 January 7th.

In the name of God Amen. The 7th day of January in the year of our Lord God a thousand, five hundred, twenty & seven.

  • I JOHN Babyr of Chew Stoke, Husbandman of good mind and whole remembrance make my testament in manner as follows:
  • First I give and bequeath my soul to Almighty God my body to be buried in the parish church of Chew in the middle of the alley (aisle) of the church before the high cross.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the mother church of Wells l2d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the parish church of Chew 6/8d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the chapel of our Lady of Chew 3/4d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the church of Stoke 3/4d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the parish church of Winford 20d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to the church of Nempnett 20d.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to Sir John Barry, my ghostly father 3/4d.
  • The residue of all my goods not bequeathed to ISABELL, my wife and to JOHN my youngest son which I make mine executors that they shall fulfil my testament and my last will and also that they shall evenly depart all my debts, goods and cattles as well within doors as without equally between them both, except mine own chamber with all manner of goods containing within the same which I give and bequeath to the said ISABELL, my wife and to this present testament making being witnesses Sir John Barry, parson there. Sir William Jonyes, Robert Keyste. Thomas Buck with many others.
